How to reduce pollution China-style

The air pollution in China reached such critical levels in January that schools were shut down, factories were closed and government vehicles were ordered off the streets.  February marked their annual Lunar New Year, meaning a lot of fireworks and smoke. Well, not this year. The government significantly reduced the amount of fireworks available to vendors and the amount sold to the public. Compared to last year, there was a 30% decrease in firework sales for the New Year. Unfortunately, they are pretty much impervious to any small smog reduction. Any ideas on how they could reduce their carbon footprint? Should we even care how dense their air is?

We kinda share the air with them, so I'd really rather they cut pollution a little bit. Maybe some regulations on factories would help cut down on their carbon footprint, or some environmental projects...

People often forget that if one area of the Earth is exponentially polluted it affects other areas since that polluted air has to go somewhere and if China does not do something to improve their air quality and decrease fossil fuel consumption then I am afraid that the entire world will be in trouble. Albeit, China does make a majority of the world's product ranging from clothing to electronics so this conributes mostly to their immense carbon footprint. Hopefully with new technological innovations and newer sources of clean energy, China will be able to clean up its polluted air.

I don't exactly know how to fix it, but it does need to be fixed. Im surprised they even allowed the olympics to be in China 4 years ago. Kinda shocking.

To my knowledge China does not have any sort of environmental protection agency, as shown by the horrid air quality they have. In my opinion the united nation should put some serious pressure on China to create such an agency, because, as Ryan said, we all share the same air.
