South Africa's craze for heroin-marijuana mixture

In an open space near the railway in the South African township of Soweto, several young men and women in their early twenties are smoking nyaope, a new drug mixture. Some look like the walking dead they are so stoned.

"I was studying but then I quit because of the drugs. I dropped out of school at 14," Thuli says through glazed eyes.

She says she sees no future for herself. She is just 16 and hooked on an extremely addictive drug which is sweeping across this nation, seizing new victims every day.

Nyaope is a whitish powder - low-grade heroin mixed with ingredients such as rat poison and sometimes even crushed-up medicine for people with HIV.

Sprinkled on top of marijuana, it is a highly addictive, life-wrecking mixture.

"I must smoke this thing; it's our medication. We can't live without it. If I don't smoke, I will get sick," says another smoker, who did not want to give his name, as he breathes in a lung full.

this drug sounds potentially fatal, not only because of the actual inhaling of the substance but its also ruining the lives of people. particularly the the ones who start so young and dropping out of school

My question is what CAN we do? There really is not much in our selection of realistic solutions. There is already too much on the world's plate.

We can't necessarily restrict South Africans from doing drugs. It is the governments responsibility to restrict the use of drugs and such.

I dont understand why they would even try heroin on top on marijuana in the first place. Youre getting high and then getting more high and addicting yourself to a terrible drug. Doesnt make sense to me why they feel they should have tried heroin.

Drug abuse around the world is nothing new and it is up to each individual country to decide what to do about it because it would be for the benefit of their own country after all.

Drugs are a part of the world and sadly they will never not be a part of the world.

This is just terrible. Unfortantly, we can only stand by and watch how this drug epidemic plays out. The South African Goverment should try to contain this drug as quickly as possible.

well the government cant really do much about this drug substance because once they have it, its stuck to them. like look at america. north america has alot of drug use over here. including addictive medical use like morphine.

It's true, there isn't much we can do. I mean it's not in our country (yet) and trying to get involved could bring more atention to it and possibly inspire the drug infested youth of America into experimenting like this and that would be a travesty...

that seems like such an intense and awful combination. it caused a 16 year old to stop having goals for herself. my opinion is for them to contain, contain, contain and keep that stuff away from our children because if our youth and young adults get a hold of this drug, and they are the future of this country..... what does our future really look like?

This article has nothing to do with America. It was published in the UK.

This could be a big problem. Marijuana and heroin are big enough problems already. The last thing we need is this stuff in America

We need to solve the drug issues in America before we help out Africa, because its will help us solve the issue at home so we can help other countries with the knowledge of how to solve the issue.

well the people trying the drug are almost impossible to help. espicially the withdrawls, just let them kill themselves. darwinism at its best.
