Fox News is trying to downplay the effects of the Republican-led government shutdown by replacing "shutdown" with "slimdown" in Associated Press reports posted on FoxNews.com. The changes have appeared in headlines, a photo caption, and story ledes.
FoxNews.com even replaced "shutdown" with "slimdown" when promoting an original FoxNews.com article that took issue with Fox's use of "slimdown." Fox News host Howard Kurtz wrote in a column that the "Fox News website keeps using the term 'slimdown' instead of shutdown, though no one would claim this was some kind of sensible Weight Watchers method of trimming government spending." Kurtz's column has the headline, "Spin Wars: Is the shutdown about blackmail or ObamaCare?" -- but Fox modified the headline to "KURTZ: Is slimdown about blackmail or ObamaCare?" on its front page.
I noticed it in the clips we watched from Fox yesterday - and I don't remember seeing it in the ones we watched Wednesday.
Do you guys think rhetorical devices like this can be effective in this case or is the situation too extreme/heated for specific terms to make a difference?

This is just another case of Fox News trying to spin a story. Their rhetoric is very heavy in every piece they do and this is no different. Changing "Shutdown" to "Slimdown" will obviously alter their views standpoint against in, and possibly lessen their anger. Yet another reason to not trust Fox!
This rhetoric of "shutdown" becoming "slimdown" definitely shows Fox News' bias toward the Republican party and that they are aware of how their media will affect the overall perception of the Republican-majority House of Representatives in this government shutdown blame game.

I feel as though slimdown is a better word to describe the "shutdown" because only part of the government is "shutdown" all of the congressmen are still being paid -.-
