Colorado Is Asking Taxpayers for $1 Billion to Help Schools

In one poor school district in Colorados San Luis Valley, students take classes in a bus garage, using plastic sheeting to keep the diesel fumes at bay. In another, there is no more money to tutor young immigrants struggling to read. And just south of Denver, a district where one in four kindergartners is homeless has cut 10 staff positions and is bracing for another cull. For decades, schools like these have struggled to keep pace with their bigger and wealthier neighbors. On Tuesday, Colorado will try to address those problems with one of the most ambitious and sweeping education overhauls in the country, asking voters to approve a $1 billion tax increase in exchange for more school funding and an educators wish-list of measures. Do you think this should be approved or not?

Is this tax increase just for Colorado?

I think this tax increase should be improved. In reality, the tax increase for every individual will not be very high. Taxes are a neccessary step in order to fund a government which will help improve bad conditions, such as this education system. A small increase in taxes is not a big price to pay to help children get a education they can utilize later in life.

I think any tax increase that would directly benefit these schools should be passed, its not fair that these schools are deprieved of money

I don't see any wrong with Colorado asking their taxpayers for $1 billion for schools, especially since education is key in the development of young children and by the descriptions of these conditions it seems like Colorado really needs to be improving their school systems. It's not like these tax dollars are going to waste either, it is an investment to the nation's future.

This should definitely be approved because it'll help the kids and help advance society, you never know the next BIll Gates could be a homeless kid in Denver...and education is the best way to prevent tragedies
