Brazilian polio survivor who has lived 43 years in a hospital

Paulo Henrique Machado has lived his life in a Brazilian hospital after contracting polio when he was an infant. Machado is paralyzed from the waist down and lives with Eliana Zagui, a fellow polio survivor who has lived in the hospital for 38 years.

"They were both encouraged to push beyond their physical limitations.

Zagui recently wrote a book about her experience growing up in the hospital. She also discovered painting, patiently dabbing at the canvas with a brush taped to a tongue depressor. The wear and tear on her teeth meant she had to limit herself but she hasn't stopped.

Machado trained as a computer animator and wrote a screenplay for an animated series. With the help of crowd-funding and a group of animators, the series is coming to life."

What do you think about Machado's experience in the hospital? Do you think if you were in the same situation as Machado that you would be able to overcome the same adversity?

I think that living in a hospital for 43 years would be terrible. I can't even sit still for 5 minutes.

I think that's wonderful how Machado copes with his disability. I don't know if I could do what he did, but if I were in his situation, I would also try to find something to do.
