In Europe and Canada cards already have smart chips installed and readers are used at retailers and restaurants, making it harder for thieves to profit from the sort of massive data breach that hit Target during the holiday shopping season.
The attack led to the theft of tens of millions of credit card numbers. Hackers appear to have stolen many phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
Despite previous calls to update U.S. cards, retailers and banks have feuded for years over card-swipe fees and the cost of making security upgrades.
Do you think we're falling behind on some of the latest technology that keeps us safe from theives?
I believe there is a lot more America is capiable of doing to protect the indivuals credit card and information. But there will always be those masterminds who find a way to steal credit card numbers. But I think we need to look at Canada's system and see if we can advance our technology to make sure this big of an incident never happens again.
Investmenting in security upgrades is the only logical choice here. With these recent security breaches, we will keep hurting our reputation if we dont invest in our own security to protect us from more incidents in the future.
I think it would be easy to update our credit cards. Credit Card companies make millions in profits and yet they are unwilling to spend a small amount of that in order to insure their customers secutiry. The fact that they want swipe fees when the upgrade would only cost them a small amount of their revenue is ridiculous. I think the first company to do upgrade will become very popular!
The U.S should always strive to ensure the financial security of its citizens, by upgrading our technology it is likely more Americans will be a lot safer with their credit cards and it would reduce the amount of fraud within the country.
This seems like a smart thing to do and yea it might cost a bit but I'm sure people will be more than willing to make the change/upgrade if it means they're more protected so that definitely is not a problem. And if the charge for the banks is so much they can charge a small fee for every card a person updates...
