Iraq has executed 26 people convicted of "terrorism" offences, according to officials.
The deaths came despite international criticism of the country's increasing use of capital punishment.
The justice ministry said Adel al-Mashhadani - allegedly a leader of a local Sunni militia known as Sahwa - was among those put to death on Sunday.
Iraq executed at least 151 people last year, up from 129 in 2012 and 18 in 2010, according to Human Rights Watch.
"Iraq's increased use of the death penalty, often after unfair trials in which many prisoners report having been tortured into confessing crimes, is a futile attempt to resolve the country's serious security and justice problems," said Phillip Luther, Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International, in November.
Iraq's increasing use of capital punishment is a major concern especially since Human Rights Watch says that these executions are being conducted following unfair trials. These executions are a poor example of Iraq attempting to keep law and order.
Iraq's increasing use of capital punishment is somthing to be concerned about. However, I agree with Diana and Malia that there probably isn't much we can really do to stop it
I agree that there is not much we can do about it besides sit and watch and hope for the best. its sad to see a region/country like Iraq which is naturally beautiful destroyed over the past 2 decades with war and other serious issues. I hope sooner rather then later Iraq can find a strong leader or group to help pull them out of the pit they are in.
