Do you think they should legalize the gold mines or will it cause a frenzy? Will people do it anyways? Does this relate back to the idea of, if you legalize something that people would do anyway, would a higher number of people then act on it(think about legalizing marijuana, how people do it anyways just like weed)?Should they convict these people or let them off easy? Should they be able to make millions without really working? What should the governments actions be?
if you look back to prohibition. when it became legal the number of people that drank drastically dropped, but all of a sudden the US had a whole new criminal to have to take of. But the the point is if you make it illegal the number of people doing it will go down, but if its legal you don't have to deal with people that would otherwise be criminals. Personally I think it should be illegal, it has been so for a reason, no reason to change it now.
I think that private individuals or companies shouldn't be able to profit off of government resources. If they choose to reopen the mines, which would be a hazard in and of itself, the government should have strict control and awareness of what's going on in the mine. They should also be monitoring the income made from working in the mines to be sure that no one's robbing them of their money. However, opening the mines for people to work in them for the government's benefit could potentially be very dangerous, as evidenced by the missing miners, and the many who have perished while working in them.

I don't really understand why mines are illegal in the first place but i think that they should just have taken the situation more calmly and this wouldn't happen.
I guess they should be convicted because they broke the law, but the mines should be opened because there is no reason to have them closed. If the mines are the governments then the government should be allowed to decide what they want to do with the gold.

Gigi, i agree except that the government is supposed to do what with this profit then? How are we to assure that there is no graft. Should this go to the people?Where else can this be put into?I don't think it should just waste.
I personally do not believe that they should legalize the gold mines because the cost of bringing the mines up to modern safety codes could be prohibitive and Illegal mining "poses a danger not only to the miners themselves, but to the communities, as well as the economy and existing mines" as said in the article. I believe people will still continue to mine because they are desperate or greedy. I think they should be convicted because they committed a crime and others are working hard for their money. I think the government should enforce this law and prosecute people who break this law.
I think that there shouldn't be any legal action against them because they where trapped in a mine for day and then they where only trying to get some money to feed their families. I believe that some people will try and prosecute them but most people wont.
I believe the miners should be convicted because it is illegal to mine and you should not be able to break the law without a punishment. I do think the government should eventually open the mine to miners though.
i think these miners should be convicted because they did enter into an illegal mining facility. I don't really understand why the mine would be closed to miners in the first place (maybe safety concerns?) but i think they should re open it for miners to use.
I think the miners should be convicted because they knew it was illegal and yet they still stayed in the mines. I believe it should be the governments decision if they want to make it legal or not.
The miners should be punished for breaking the law, yet I think the mining should be legalized under the government regulations to provide more jobs to the people for living.
i also did this article in my summaries and I think that the government should make mining legal no matter where it is unless its dangerous. The amount of people out of work is serious and they should encourage as many people as they can to work.
The miner's should have some sort of punishment because they were aware that going into those mines is illegal. I think the government should clearly state why these mines are illegal to go into, possibly because of health safety problems.
I think that they should make mining legal if the area is safe enough to do so. If the government legalizes it then they should regulate it and there would be more job opportunities for people.
I don't think that gold mines should be made legal for anybody to just go in and mine a bunch of gold, because that will inevitably cause problems, as seen by the California Gold Rush. If that was to happen, people would probably get hurt and children would be forced to mine gold and stuff like that. Instead, I think the government should take control of the mines, and then perhaps employ people to work in the mines and pay them wages for their work. This way, the government could acquire the gold and then sell it in order to improve the area in its entirety, and at the same time, those who are employed could have a way to make a living. This is kind of a optimistic proposition, because I really don't know the infrastructure of South Africa, but its the best thing I can personally think of for the government to do.
