New Zealand's new swimsuit safety Video:Fun or offensive?---Trail Mix

Air New Zealand's new swimsuit safety video: Fun or offensive?

A commercial becoming viral over the message of airline safety, receives "turbulence" over whether or not it was appropriate to use swimsuit models within this commercial.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/12/travel/air-new-zealand-safety-video/index.html?iref=allsearch

Do you think the use of swimsuit models was appropriate in the message of airline safety? Was there a line broken when combining a serious message of safety and the use of swimsuit models?

I don't think there is any problem with using swim suit models. It would probably make people pay more attention to the safety video and in today's society models are used in almost every commercial on t.v.

I think that using swimsuit models was appropriate because like the woman reporter said it draws attention to the safety video which is generally ignored.

It might not be appropriate to everyones standards, but by now people know the rules of a plane and they were just trying to be funny. I think people are too sensetive sometimes

I dont see a problem with the airlines using swimsuit models to promote airline safety. Now people will not ignore it because the will be more into the video.

I do not think that using swimsuit models should be a concern as long as they are conveying the airline safety messages. Yet it might seem appropriate for younger audience from the standard of their parents.

I think it's more fun than offensive. I believe it draws more attention to the actual message to the ad which is airline safety.

It's more fun  than offensive. This video makes the idea of airline safety much more entertaining.

I think that the video is trying to get people to pay attention to the safety aspects rather then the swimsuit aspects of it.

Although it is a bit sexist to be using swimsuit models in a commercial that is completely unrelated, it did accomplish the goal of getting for attentio and reaching more people. Things that cause controversy or are scandalous are often the things that are paid the most attention to.

There is no problem with the video because they were showing nothing inappropriate and it is just an advertising method to catch the attention of people. They were focusing more on safety rather than the models.

I think that this is a good idea and not offensive because, its making people pay more attention to safety.... this is about safety not sex.

I don't see any problem with this video. There are far worse things on TV, and half the time nothing is said about those. Its just a fun way to get people to actually pay attention to the safety videos on air planes.

As long as they are showing more concern with the safety i don't see a problem with using the swimsuit models, the models are not their main concern.

I see no problem with using swimsuit models to get a point across. I feel it adds some humor which can draw more attention to the commercial.

Even though swimsuit models have nothing to do with the video, it did get the message across and people are actually paying attention to it. I don't think it was necessarily bad that they used swimsuit models for the video.

I don't think its offensive considering this is the kind of networking and advertisement that gets peoples attention. Almost every commercial has something offensive to someone and you will never be able to please everybody so you have to aim for the majority crowd.

I think that this is being extremely over analyzed. The commerical business is a money-making machine, doing whatever is neccessary to make money. That is why people have to ignore their emotions when it comes to commericals, despite the fact that it is hard, because it is simply to provide entertainment.

The fact of the matter is that no matter what you do, the usage of sexuality in advertising is effective. At the end of the day, we're all humans and men will undoubtedly pay attention that involves women, and generally speaking, the less clothing the better. I understand why some people might find this commercial offensive, because having women in swimsuits demonstrating how to properly use airplane safety equipment might seem gratuitous, but if it gets the attention of people, then I don't have a problem with it. The world is only going to continue getting more and more sexualized, and there's nothing that we can do about it.

It is amusing to me to read the replies on here where every male student said they thought it was fun and not offensive. I personally think it is unnecessary and along with Carls Jr commercials of women sexually eating burgers while half naked. Its unnecessary. How often do you see commercials of men sexually eating burgers in their underwear? Almost never.

Individual Response by Timothy Ingle 2/24/14:

I believe that if they want to get the message of airline safety out to the people, maybe they shouldn't use a gorgeous model. It may distract the peers and they might not get the entire message about airline safety. I don't think it will make much of a difference though..

I think the use of these swimsuit models was a smart tactic on the airlines part because it does bring many peoples attention which causes more people to see the commercial along with it's message about safety.

It's just a simple joke that not only gets a message across but also makes people laugh. I feel like people need to stop getting offended over a little bit of skin.
