Trail Mix: Violent scenes as Venezuelan street battles continue

Protests in Venezuela have seen the National Guard use tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators who have fought back with missiles and stones. The country's state prosecutor said the death toll from a month of violent protests had risen to 28, after the nation's top court ordered opposition mayors to dismantle barricades set up by street protesters. Do you think poilce officers have a right to use gas and water cannons agisnt protestors?

I think they have a right to use those against protestors to a certain extent, but this situation is different because the protestors attacked back with missiles and stones. I think it was fine for the police to do what they did, it appears it was done to protect themselves, or so it seems.

If they are using missles and stones i believe they should gas and use water cannons because that will disperse and angry riot and make people leave and when they leave they automatically become safer from the chaos

I don't see anything wrong with what the police did. they were responding to the protesters violence and it is better than lethal force.

I think the police we're trying their best on controlling the crowd and I feel like they did the right thing. Especially if protesters were using missiles and stones.

As long as they don't use deadly chemical weapons like Syria did, it's fine. So I really don't see a problem in that.

I agree that the police officers were fairly using their rights to defense themselves since the protesters were using violence and the police force was not targeted at a certain person(s)

The police officers were just doing what they could to control the situation while defending themselves.

I think the police officers have a right to use gas and water As long as the protesters continue to attack them.

I believe the police were right by using these tactics in these protests because they are intended to control the violence rather than create more.

I believe that the police officers chose the best alternative and responded to the angry mob in the best way that they could have. The gas and water cannons are a better alternative to any of the other options that they could have chosen, especially ones that could have resulted into more deaths.

I think the officers had the ride to use tear gas and water canons in order to simmer down the violence from the protesters, but it has been known for officials to use excessive force and if this starts to happen again I think that something needs to be done.

I think that if they are endangering the lives of other innocent civilians, necessary force should be used. The police are put in that position to keep the peace in the area and if the protesters are causing violence the police really have no choice but to use things like tear gas and water cannons.

They should not use tear gas and water canons to fight fire with fire. They are supposed to be those who bring justice with a definite end. I know that is general and every circumstance is different, but i feel that they can use other traditional methods, because this will just spark protests and future problems.

If the protesters are using violence, then the only way the police can stop them is by violence
