Fergalicious: Nigeria U-turn on kidnapped schoolgirl rallies

Nigeria has seen almost daily rallies calling for the government to take firmer action to rescue the girls that were kidnapped by Boko Haram. The government earlier banned public protests across Nigeria after scuffles broke out last week between demonstrators organised under the #BringBackOurGirls and a new government-sponsored group called #ReleaseOurGirls. Officials claimed the rallies were becoming a security threat and banned the rallies/protests with "immediate effect." But a day later, another police statement denied issuing any protest banning order, insisting that they had only released an "advisory notice". The protests are now being allowed.

How do you feel about the Nigerian government previously banning the protests/rallies? What cautions do you think should be taken in order to prevent conflict during these rallies? What should the government do to bring back the girls that were kidnapped?

I do not think the government should have stopped the protests, they should take action. There should be police to keep order in the rallies. The government should get the girls back by going in with force and getting them girls back from them bad people.

Nigerians have right to protest and express their opinions and feelings as long as it is violent and displaying clear danger. And I personally think the Nigerian government should be ashamed to mention "security threat." The girls were not secure. So, bring them back. Do something.

They should not have banned protests they should have police at the protest to keep everyone calm and they should find a way to negotiate with Boko Haram to get the girls back.

They should ban rallies if they are gettiong dangerous, but they also should be looking for ways to get the girls back

The Nigerian citizens have the right to peaceful protest. It is the government's responsibility to protect it's citizens and bring the kidnapped girls back.

If the citizens are protesting this shows that the government has a responsibility to deal with the problem. The government should not be able to suppress its people and allow them to peacefully protest.

Unless the protests got out of hand and were promoting violence they shouldnt have banned them. this shows that people care about those girls and want to get them returned safe.

I think the best way to stop the rallies would have been to resolve the conflict and go for the girls and use civilan help.

As long as the protests aren't violent the people have a right. There should be law enforcement in case the rallies get out of hand. The government should not negotiate with the Boko Haram and should go in with troops.

I think the government is upset with all the attention that the protest is receiving, because this puts extra pressure on the Nigerian government to take action. I think the protest shouldn't have been stopped because the more attention it receives, the more likely something is to be done.

Governments may try to prevent and discourage protests but if the people feel strongly enough about some certain injustice they will protest and fight it. I think the only thing that will prevent violence at these protests is peaceful protesters. The authorities will always resort to violence.

these protest are not going against anything, but it is a bit extreme, i'm pretty sure the president is doing all that he can to bring back the girls so we shouldn't stress even more with these protest.

I think the government stopped the protests because they felt there would be violence and backlash within the people. Never less, the people do have a right to a peaceful protest.
