The Mexican government has been cracking down on drug cartels, which in response has caused the iron industry to collapse. The reason: drug cartels are also working in the mining industry. With the shutdowns of several mines due to their affiliation with drug cartels, the industry has flat lined. Why do you think drug cartels would also work for the mining industry, and should the Mexican government stop shutting mines down?
the article mentions that drug cartels target mines because they are "easy prey" to whatever they needed. I am glad that the Mexican government is taking a lot of action on drug cartels, but by shutting down the many of the mines, I think it's more detrimental in the long run. With the iron industry flat-lining, the economy is going to take a hit, not to mention all the now unemployed workers whose families need their incomes in order to survive. It's not like the mines willfully gave up their mining operations to the drug cartels; these cartels threatened and extorted from them and endangered the mining workers. By driving fear in the miners, drug cartels could easily make use of the mines for their nefarious purposes. Given that the mines are sources for work, shutting them down is just punishing the victims who may not have had a choice against the drug cartels.
