As you may of heard the first patient to be diagnosed with Ebola in the Unites States has been discovered. The unnamed man was brought to a local hospital in Dallas Texas after he started showing symptoms of the disease. Officials at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital say that the man is in currently in serious condition and that doctors have been keeping him in isolation to keep the disease from spreading. The man caught the disease while on a trip to Liberia a couple weeks previously.
Do you think the US needs to limit, or stop travel all together with these nations affected by Ebola?
It's definitely a concern because this is the first news of Ebola reaching inside the states. No doubt Americans are getting nervous. Because of this, I feel that yes, the US needs to take more precautions against the Ebola virus inside the nation, including air travel. I think that now that the first patient was discovered, people will get paranoid especially if they just traveled somewhere using airports, a place where there are a lot of bacteria and potential foreign viruses (harmless or not). Most likely, less people will want to fly, and when they have to, they'll probably be super aware of germs and the like.
The US and the rest of the world need to take drastic measures to curb Ebola, the disease has caused chaos in West Africa and in order to better fight it we need to allocate more resources to regions grappling with the disease. People should not be able to fly out of West Africa unless they are tested before hand. Containment is an important part of fighting this disease.
I don't believe limiting our travel and borders with that part of the world is going to help in the long run. Initially, we would be blocking the virus itself from entering the U.S., but we wouldn't be doing anything to help contain it over in Africa. Are priority needs to be attacking this disease at its source, sort of like a fire. Pouring water on the top of the flames is going to nothing to stop the fire from burning on and spreading. We are more than capable of containing ebola here in the U.S., and so that is what we must do.
I don't know if limiting travel and vacationing to specific regions of the world is the right call. People need to be more aware and cautious about were they are going and how it may affect them but dont selected limits on traveling. If we do so, the public we be neglecting the country and would be forced to assume only horrible things about it. Isolation has never led a country toward anything good.
I really like what Alexis stated: Isolation has never led a country toward anything good. That is very true. We must not isolate these countries, we must embrace them. Now, that doesn't mean we shouldn't isolate and contain areas of wide spread virus outbreaks. We can not cut these countries off though. A big issue is their economies. Part of the healing process for these nations is going to be rebuilding their weak economies. Trading and doing business with them is going to revitalize there markets and create opportunities for their civilians to gain financial stability.
I don't think that they should limit travelling. On the other hand I think that any person leaving Africa should be tested before leaving and prove that he/she has been tested and that he is in a safe condition.
Ebola has been spreading very rapidly in these African nations and you can easily catch the deadly disease. It has killed so many people already and has been a struggle to contain so maybe we should be taking measures to limit the travel over to these nations. It has already occured in the US and it would be very tradgic if it were to spread in our country.
The Ebola hysteria needs to stop!!!!!! Yes if you are infected you should be quarantined, but we need to stop being so dramatic about this. Not to downplay the seriousness of the virus. The way you get ebola is by contact with the blood or bodily fluids of a person or animal infected with it. Sounds a lot like AIDS. Once we calm down, we can take better precaution.
aya, A problem with testing people is that a lot of people lie or don't remember everything they did when they were there. That's what happened in this case
Ebola is a serious concern, especially now that it has entered the united states ad it should be dealt with swift and with any means necessary. Traveling should not be stopped but it should be limited to nations seriously infected with Ebola. Anybody leaving Africa to come to the U.S. should be checked for the disease before the are allowed to travel or enter the country. Ebola has spread rapidly, and we mus do what we ca to prevent that in the United sates.
To quarantine the US from incoming people from infected countries i think is unnecessary because they should just check the people and make sure they do not have Ebola
I do think that the U.S. should limit travel between countries infected with Ebola. I applaud those who are trying to do a good deed and help the people infected, but when they themselves are infected, they come back to America where it could potentially spread to to other U.S. citizens. This is not a good thing.
I feel like the people that go to treat infected nations should only be specialists, and that they should understand that if they are infected they cannot be expect entry back into the mainstream of American life. Whether they are contagious or not, all the people visiting those nations should be kept in a sterile hospital until a vaccination can be found the disease is 100% eradicated.
I think we should do everything what's possible to stop spreading this disease. Ebola is one of the deadliest viruses and I think the only way not to spread it in other countries is to avoid going to the affected places.
