Brazilian Congress raises its own salaries! - Team Tiv

Brazil's congress recently raised its own salaries by 34%, making their annual salary around $187,000. They are considered among the highest payed government officials in the world. Should Brazil's congress be allowed to raise its own pay while the wrest of the country is struggling with serious financial issues?

I think that it is wrong that the government officials raised their own pay when their people are in much greater need of it.

Honestly, I'm surprised by the gall of the Brazilian Congress, to so blatantly reward themselves generously while the majority of the nation struggles to make ends meet. It's obvious that such a raise is undeserving considering the economic slump the Brazil is in. Rather than trying to work toward improving their economy, Congress is abusing their power to cushion their already luxurious lifestyles in comparison with the conditions that the rest of the country are living in .

It is important that they think about what is best for their people, not themselves.

I think that these government officials need to live like most of their people do for a while. I think they need to learn just how bad it is. Maybe then they will write and pass laws that actually help people instead of just make their lifestyles more luxurious.

Of course they shouldn't, especially since Brazil already has some of the worst income inequality in the world.

I think this was wrong of them to do and considering they don't really have a good reason for doing this and they are already the highest payed government officials I think they should focus on rebuilding the strength in their economy instead paying themselves.

A major issue with this too is the government has employed a committee to provide cuts to federal spending to help relieve the countries economic crisis. In my opinion, congress is raising their salaries now in an effort to prevent from losing if the committee makes it around to cutting spending in their respected division.

OF COURSE NOT. But i know how little power the populace of these types of regions have and its depressing how little care MOST of their government has. I also extremely thankful for the small percentage of government offices who'd like a change in the unjust justice system. People just need to begin fighting for justice and do so in a clean and honorable way.

I think they shouldn't have done that considering the country's poverty.

I dont think that the congress should allowed to pay their selves more than others especially by 34%. Also there are many people in the country that need money and they are taking advantage of controlling their payment this way.

In no way should congress be allowed to raise their own pay when the whole country is stricken with serious poverty. No citizen will want to support a government that is using their power to only promote themselves and not their country. If the government is supposed to be the one lifting a country out of serious financial problems they can not be doing this, if they want the public's support and approval. This is wrong in many ways but the bottom line is that it is just moving Brazil in the wrong direction. Poverty will continue and so will greed in congress.

Considering the astronomically high crime and poverty rate in Brazil, this was dumb. If those weren't a problem then I would MAYBE be willing to hear their side. Maybe they should only get a raise (besides ones related to matching inflation rates which can be ok) after they solve the problems or at least make a big dent in them.

Maybe if these people managed to fix a broken Brazil they would have deserved that money. But Brazil is still poverty ridden, with a police force that uses lethal force way to often, and gangs running slums in all of its major cities. I would think Brazil's socialist coalition government would do more to help the nation but I guess bureaucracy is socialism's largest flaw.

NO! The government should not be able to raise its own salaries, especially when the rest of the country is struggling. This just shows the corruption in the Brazilian government because they obviously don't care about the peoples they serve as they are only concerned about themselves.

I understand that congress should be mature enough to determine their own salaries, but giving themselves a substantial raise when this money could have been spent to better the country is hard to grasp.

I absolutely think it is wrong for the Brazilian government to have the ability to raise their own salaries, especially in a nation struggling financially.
