2 amigos: Australia donates A$200m to UN climate fund

Australia has pledged A$200m (£106m; $166m) to help poorer nations mitigate the impact of global warming, in what is seen as a U-turn for the government. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the money for the UN-backed Green Climate Fund (GCF) would come over four years from the country's foreign aid budget. Australia is one of the world's worst per capita greenhouse gas polluters. On Tuesday, a report by two non-government organizations said Australia was the worst performing industrial country in terms of climate change.

do you think more countries should be contributing and giving money to the cause?

what do you think compelled Australia to do this?

I definitely think that other countries should do that too. Maybe Australia knows how much harm it is causing therefore it is donating and not only should Australia do so, but other countries as well.

I think everyone realizes that climate change is a serious problem that needs to be answered. More nations need to send money to these poorer nations so that they can afford to be more environmentally conscience. For the wealthier nations in the world, like Australia, there is no excuse, the fate of humanity lies in the balance.

I think that more countries should definitely be contributing and donating money to the cause. Any effort we can make towards protecting the environment is a good one. I think Australia is just aware of what's happening to the environment and wants to start with small changes.

I think every country should contribute as much as they can because global warming is everyone's problem. and I think Australia decided to make a contribution maybe because they want to change and set an example for their citizens.

I do think more countries should donate to this cause. Obviously the environment is important and governments should do all they can to protect it.

I definitely think more countries should be contributing to this cause to help our enviornment. Austrailia probably realized that climate change is becoming a serious problem all over the world and are trying their best to do something about it.

Hopefully, Australia has fully realized the dangers we face caused by climate change. It would be phenomenal to see other countries such as China and India follow in Australia's footsteps. We too should be leading the way in this global movement. It is important, regardless of the supplies and time we have. The time to act is now, and it is reassuring to see one of the worst countries in terms of climate change taking a charge against international issues.

I think Australia did this as a way for them to make-up their damages to the environment. The more countries helping out would the struggle of the environment much easier.

I agree that all contries should contribute into the cause, as it impacts everyone on earth. I'm sure that Australia feels like they are doing a lot by helping poorer countries, but wouldn't it be better to improve it's own nation's industrial ways, given that it is more industrialized than poorer countries?

Wealthy nations NEED to aid developing nations if they want any hope of making any impact on the global climate. Some people simply couldn't survive if they were forced to take action on their own. This is a good sign.
