Alpha Squad: French Hostages freed in exchange for Al-Qaeda militants

A French man who was held by an Al-Qaeda linked group in Mali was freed as a result of a prisoner swap between France and Al-Qaeda's North African wing. Serge Lazaravic was captured in the north western part of Mali in 2011 and has been in captivity for the past 3 years.

The United States has clearly stated that it will not negotiate with terrorist organizations, in the wake of the ISIS threat multiple Americans have been captured and later executed by militants. Should the United States adopt a policy that tries to negotiate the release of American citizens from militant groups?

I think they should because I believe that the hostages' safety should be on first place. I don't want to know how their families must feel and if there's any chance to make a deal for a release, the United States should consider a policy that tries to negotiate the release.

I think this is a hard decision to make because obviously negotiating would mean we give/do something for them and we don't want to support them at all. I honestly don't know how to answer this question. I understand there are family's without their loved ones and I cant imagine how heart broken they must be but what would ISIS want from us? would they want militants from us? can you imagine being someone that had to be one of those militants?

I think the US should adopt a similar policy since they should make efforts to rescue American citizens; however i think that we should always do a prison exchange because sometimes the consequences of releasing one of the prisoners that a militant group wants might be too great

I think we should try to adopt a policy similar to this, but I think we would need to be careful with who we're negotiating with and what we're negotiating for.

The United States should adopt a policy like that because American lives are at risk. If it was another situation besides hostages, I agree that maybe they shouldn't negotiate. However, American citizen's lives are on the line and it is the governments job to protect them. Therefore, America needs to adopt a different policy.

Negotiating with terrorists is unacceptable. As far as the captured American citizens go, they are beyond the borders of our country and allied nations. Exiting the United States willingly marks the responsibility of protection upon you void. You are entering other countries, which will protect you according to their rules and policies. If you don't want to risk capture by a group such as ISIS, don't go to those countries! If you must, go there knowing the consequences if you are captured. I am not saying we shouldn't help captured citizens, I'm only implying we can not negotiate with these organizations.

Zero tolerance polices never work and this is no exception. There are definitely times where context is important and rules need to adapt to the situation. So yes, the US should change their policies with negotiating with terrorist organisations.

I think the US should adopt a policy to help relase our citizens from militant groups because it is helping to save American lives. It is not very safe to be negotiating with terrorist so the government should be careful with what they are getting into.

I think if we start negotiating with the terrorist things will only become worse.

I think they should try to negotiate because it may help them and save American lives.

If it means saving american lives the government should have some sort of negotiations ability. i believe, however only Americans citizens should be negotiated. not any aspects leading to terror.. that is non negotiable.
