6 men (4 from Syria, 1 from Tunisia and 1 from Palestine) have been released from Guantanamo bay by the US government. Do to their home countries being unstable or unsafe, Uruguay has agreed to take them. Uruguayan president José Mujica, a torture survivor himself, said that he will bring hospitality to "human beings who have suffered a terrible kidnapping in Guantanamo Bay."
Should Uruguay and other countries be accepting prisoners from Guantanamo bay? Should the US even be releasing these prisoners?
Jose Mujica is my favorite human being on this planet, perhaps of all time.
I think its important to point out that these "suspected terrorists" were never even charged, we have no proof to say these men were terrorists. These men were cleared for release 4 years ago, but still had to live in Guantanamo. And I do think these prisoners should either be released or given trials, and moved to other legitimate prison. Guantanamo should be closed, it violates international law laid out in the Geneva conventions. Information that has been leaked shows us how inhumane this prison is. More countries should be willing to take in the prisoners the United States has cleared for release, but find their home countries to unstable.
Going off of what Sami said: These prisoners were never even charged with crimes. They never saw a day in court. That is wrong. There is something fundamentally wrong about us preaching equal rights and freedom if we can not secure these same liberties to other human beings. We have no right to hold prisoners without proof they have committed a felony.
I don't really know if Uruguay should be accepting prisoners. I think it is their countries decision. As for the United States, yes we should release them. These men were charged without a trial and tortured as a result. For a country that advocates human rights, we are doing an absolutely awful job in meeting our own standard.
i agree with Kayli, how are we going to get anywhere if don't follow our own country's standards? we won't get anywhere. this is wrong and they should be released or given a fair trial.
I do think that Uruguay should accept the prisoners because they are innocent. Also, the country can do whatever it wants. And yes, US should be releasing these prisoners especially because they aren't guilty and have been there without a trial.
I pretty much agree with everything that has been said. The US should be releasing the prisoners, especially since they've been victims of abuse (of human rights). For a nation that strongly supports and encourages human rights, it would be very hypocritical if it didn't do anything on behalf of the tortured prisoners. I believe that countries have the right to choose for themselves whether or not to accept released prisoners.
Yes, these countries should take in these "prisoners". These men and women were never proven guilty or even charged. They have done nothing wrong and deserve to be taken in, instead of returning to their countries. The U.S has no right to keep these prisoners if they are not charged or given a trial. it is unconstitutional to detain them with no formal reason.
I agree that it is Uruguay's decision if they want to be accepting these released prisoners or not. I also think the United States should be releasing these men because they were charged without a trial and it is unfair for them to be tortured because of it.
