Miso Soup: ISIS launches attack on oil-rich northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk!

01 isis kobani 1018

In an effort to be a potential attempt to capture the key-oil rich city, or to divert Kurdish troops fighting to capture the Islamist extremist group's stronghold, ISIS militants have attacked Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

Question for discussion: Do you think ISIS is trying to capture the Kirkuk oil reserves in order to gain power?

They are obviously trying to gain power. As demonstrated in class the other day-one of American's only concerns is gas prices. Once they gain power over the oil: they gain power over America.

It seems like they are trying to gain power with oil.All Americans just care about them selves and how much things are not what is happening in the real world just what is happening in their own world.

i think it is so they can gain power. if they control oil reserves, they can cut of some oil being sent to the rest of the world and/or gain money selling that oil

As ISIS attacks oil distribution centers and wells the U.S. will become more militant for every drop of oil wasted. If ISIS wants to launch a full blown oil war similar to Kuwait then they ate on the right tract.

Yes, I think that they are trying to gain power in any way possible to pose a bigger threat to America.

This is a direct attempt on power and grab for money. Last year, ISIS militants captured several oil reserves in Kirkuk and sold them at prices as low as $20/barrel on the black market, making an estimated $2-3 MILLION daily last September. This type of money will buy weapons and other military hardware, resulting in a growing threat in the Middle East.  To ISIS, oil is a commodity that they deeply rely on to survive and operate.

I think that ISIS is taking over oil reserves in order to scare people and to gain power. Oil is used for a lot of different things, so by ISIS taking control of something the people need this can give them power to control the people.

I agree with everyone who thinks they are trying to gain power by taking control of the oil.

I believe ISIS is trying to gain more power in order to gain more recognition and pose as a greater threat to other countries.

I do think that ISIS is trying to gain power by taking over this oil reserve because like someone else brought up, by having the oil they can make large amounts of money which can help fund their horrible deeds. I also think that they are attacking Kirkuk because they want to gain more control of Iraq.

I agree and think ISIS is trying to gain power by taking over the oil reserve. Like someone said if they gain power over oil they also gain power over America.

I do think that ISIS is trying to gain power by taking control of oil because wealth is an important part of power.
