6 dead, hundreds injured after Amtrak train derails in Philadelphia-Miso Soup

The train left Washington on Tuesday with 238 passengers and five crew members aboard, heading for New York. But it never made it, derailing around 9:30 that night in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia

What do you think the local government should do about things such as this? Should they monitor the speeds of public transportation in order to make it more safe? If not, what could they do to take steps to make public transportation more safe?

The government should regulate the safety of public transportation methods, such as speed tests, and railroad inspections, an unnecessary tragedy like this shouldn't happen.

I believe that there needs to be more of a sense of obligation on the conductor's part. They have hundreds of people relying on them, and yet their recklessness and disregard is oft the reason for these accidents. Further education or accountability checks possibly need to be implemented to keep conductors "on top of their game" and the public safe.

The only thing they could do to help this is to have extra maintenance on the track. speed wont make much difference as long as the track is working properly

I think that the government should put more regulations on public transportation, because the driver has so much freedom to go as fast as he wants which can cause danger for the people taking the train.

Yes they should monitor the speed to and any other preventable components of a public transportation accident

The conductors should be better educated about the dangers of travelling too fast. They are responsible for hundreds of people on their trains and should be more aware of what could happen if they go too fast. In addition to this the speed of the trains needs to be more closely monitored.

There should regular check ups on all forms of public transportation and there should be regular monitoring on drivers/conductors of those in charge of the transportation.

The government needs to monitor the speed of the trains that are going by. This incident was easy to avoid considering the train was going far too fast for its own safety. This is definitely something the government must monitor as it is putting the lives of hundreds in jeopardy.

there is so much that can be done to prevent train problems: more responsibility on the conductor, speed can be monitored, often check ups and inspections

They need to check the speeds of all trains to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

the fact that this happened says that the government programs and departments of safety should spend more resorses on public transit. this should have never happened and there must be laws that governs speed of trains in residential areas.

There most definitely should be more regular inspections of trains and their conductors to ensure the safety of passengers.

I think there should be more caution on the safety of public transportation. They should have an emergency plan to help with situations like this.

The government should monitor the speed. They should also make sure all the tracks are new and safe.
